Democracy and Disintermediation A Dangerous Relationship
What is disintermediation? In wider terms, it indicates the absence of a median entity between two subjects. As isknown, it was a term born in the economic-financial sector, which then spread to different areas of social life. Thisvariety of uses hasmade it ambiguous, an ambiguity that can develop on two levels. The first is almost inevitablebecause it is the consequence of its varied use. By disintermediation we can mean, for example, the absence ofmediators during an economic negotiation, the possibility of buying a plane ticket without travel agency costs, or thedynamic that is created between society and institutions with the use of Internet in the political arena. From thispoint of view, the word is ambiguous because it is overly generic. Thesecond level of ambiguity relates to therelationship between disintermediation and democracy because, on the one hand, it allows us to accept therequests of citizens who want a moredirectandtransparentrelationship with the political elites,...

Constitutional Democracy and the Challenges of Anti-Liberalism Lessons from Experience
In our book, we offer a contribution to critically rethink not only the illiberal wind blowing on contemporary democracies but also the illiberal and undemocratic side of those liberal theories that, equating democratic procedures with the market economy, prefer to defend inequality at the expense of rights. The complexity that we learn from experience is often at risk of being flattened, as observed in empirical research, on the horizon of the present, and at the same time cannot be captured by normative theories that are often blind to the facts (Rosales, 2014).

Oltre a rinsaldare l&rsqu...
Illiberal Trends Democracies under Pressure
A new specter is roaming the world: illiberalism. The past decade has seen a proliferation of studies on the rise of illiberal tendencies in Europe and around the world. Old disputes have been reopened about the compatibility of democracy and liberalism, the correctness of the term “illiberal democracy”, and the meaning of equality, respect for rights, and the autonomy of powers. This book in the Polidemos series contributes to the broad ongoing debate on these issues from a perspective that includes theoretical-conceptual reflection, empirical analysis, and legal analysis. The six contributions range from an analysis of the new processes of autocratization to the implications that democratic backsliding may have for the future of the European Union to an analysis of the internal situations in some states where the illiberal trend is particularly, but not homogeneously, manifest: Serbia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
Latin America at a Glance Recent Political and Electoral Trends
Latin America at a Glance: Recent Political and Electoral Trends presents an incisive collection of academic essays derived from a series of international seminars held at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan between November 2022 and April 2023. Edited by Samuele Mazzolini, this volume synthesises the intellectual contributions of some leading experts, offering a meticulous exploration of contemporary Latin American politics. The essays traverse the intricate terrain of the region’s political landscape, delving into historical underpinnings, democratic dilemmas, social protests, electoral challenges, unexpected political outcomes, and the emergence, evolution, and ramifications of populism.
On Tradition, Common Sense and Conspiracies Strategies and Insights of the Contemporary Far-Right
The contributions that make this small volume so precious are the very fruitful insights that arose during those seminars, representing an important toolbox for those who are interested in gaining insights into the tactics and strategies employed by contemporary populist radical-right parties and far-right parties. In fact, it is here of the utmost relevance to note that, also in virtue of such well-conceived and employed devices, the extreme right no longer represents a circumscribed sphere or a galaxy per se, still dangerous yet “confined” and “under control”, so to speak (Ignazi 1994, Mudde 2019). In fact, many of the conspiracy theories, beliefs, opinions, and ideologies associated with the extreme right (Griffini 2023; Orofino and Allchorn 2023) that were thought to have been relegated to the past, are today not only more alive than ever, but almost perfectly welded within the conservative mainstream (in some cases even referred to as moderate)2 and are ...
